That Glazed Look in your Eyes

Donuts. Those sweet, cushiony pillows of sugary fried carbohydrate goodness. Melts in your mouth and leads to the inevitable sugar crash an hour later. What joy!

Saturdays have long been donut day in my family. While I have since outgrown the cartoons that used to accompany them, I still enjoy a sugary breakfast from time to time. In keeping with this family tradition, my brother and I recently celebrated the weekend with a trip to Glazed Donut Works in Deep Ellum, Dallas.

Pink signs had me dreaming about Voodoo Donuts in Portland

Donuts so lovely they could be fake

The lineup of options was quite impressive. Thankfully my brother is consistently my voice of reason so we only ended up choosing three. Who knows what would have happened if I had been left to my own devices.

Even getting there early in the morning they were already sold out of some!

Our chosen three were the Red Velvet with cream cheese, Strawberry Mascarpone, and Rosewater with petal.

Biting into this heavily frosted cake donut, I could hear my sweet tooth crying out in anticipation. Would it live up to the hype? Could we handle another too sweet yet dry donut experience?

Thankfully Glazed more than delivered. Our hands down favorite proved to be the Strawberry Mascarpone. Though heavily frosted, the subtle strawberry sweetness of the glaze perfectly complemented the firm yet moist body of the donut. The second bite yielded a creamy taste of dolloped mascarpone and a slice of fresh strawberry from the center. That bite left me with the taste of Springtime on my lips and a smile on my face.

The favorite

Honorable mention goes to the Rosewater with petal donut. While floral flavors are less than typical in your average diet, Glazed did an excellent job of balancing between the aromatic rose and saccharine nature of the glaze donut. My brother is not much of an adventurous eater, and while he refused to eat the petal itself, even he agreed it was “pretty freaking good.” The body of the donut was soft and sweet, with a delicate rose flavor that lingered on the tongue. It was a unique taste that conjured fond memories of nibbling macarons while strolling through Paris.

Red Velvet v. Strawberry

On my next visit I’m looking forward to trying a classic glazed, I mean it is in the name of the shop and was sold out so it must be tasty. What are your favorite donut flavors?
