My Best Friend (‘s wedding is a month away!)
People | July 29th, 2015
I have been lucky enough to have had the same best friend for the last 15 years.
It was August of 2000 when we met. I was a brace-faced, sun-in blonde 7th grader who had five inches of height on all my friends and a growing love for fashion. Chelsea was a horse enthused, bubbly brunette with a perma-smile and exceptional style. Of course we bonded over one another’s carefully chosen first-day-of-school outfits. Her’s: A plaid button down (purchased from a boutique on Rodeo Drive in LA), with a denim miniskirt and white Adidas Superstar sneakers. Mine: A periwinkle blue cowl neck shirt (OMG she knew what a cowl neck was?) with a distressed denim miniskirt and white Phat Farms kicks. It was BFF at first sight.
Since then our style has matured (thank goodness) as well as our friendship. We survived the horrors of Middle School with evil teachers, scarily aggressive eighth graders and the heartaches of first crushes. She helped keep me sane through my parent’s divorce and I answered every late night phone call about her boy of the week.
In high school we navigated through cliques, different friendships, first kisses and first breakups. When she moved to a new town Junior year, I went with her to the first day of school so she wouldn’t have to wait awkwardly alone for first period.
In college we took separate paths in different cities, but never lost touch of one another. Eventually we got our own bachelorette pad in Midtown and shacked up with two cats, a dog and the occasional passing dude. We grew up, gained knowledge, fought, changed, adapted and through it all remained as close as sisters.
Now at 26 years old, 15 years into our friendship and 23 days away from one of the biggest days in her life, I wanted to take a moment away from planning and appointments to celebrate Miss Chelsea Mae. I don’t know who I would have become without her by side and I am so glad that I never have to know.
We survived 18 years of schooling, shot guns in Texas, drank Absinthe in Paris, partied with Lady Gaga in Las Vegas, are listed as sisters on Facebook and managed not to kill each other in the three years we lived together. It has been a beautiful journey together and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for our friendship and her marriage. Probably a lot of me third wheeling! (What else is new?)
The weekly wedding countdown commences now! Three weeks left and next week I share what it was like to fulfill the Maid of Honor duty of throwing a bridal shower! It was quite the affair.
