Four Ways to Live a Little Greener

Happy Earth Day!

In celebration of our wonderful planet, we are exploring a few simple ways to live your life a little greener and reduce your environmental impact.

by Jordan McQueen

When I lived in San Francisco, living green was exceptionally easy. I already took the bus or walked everywhere I went and the city not only has citywide recycling but compost as well. Then I moved to Texas, where my last apartment complex did not even offer separate recycling. This meant monthly hauls to the recycling bin behind the library while I cursed my landlord and wondered what year it was that we didn’t even have recycling! Thankfully living a more environmentally conscious life does not always have to be complicated or laborious. Here are a few easy changes and activities that will improve not only the planet but your life as well.

Four Ways to Live a Little Greener

1. Say goodbye to junk mail.

– Tired of opening your mailbox to an explosion of worthless coupons and advertisements? Registering with the Direct Marketing Association’s allows you to manage the types of adverts you receive. It takes about three months, but after that time you will see a significant decrease in junk mail. Good for the trees and your mailbox.

2. Commit to purchasing fewer bottled drinks each week.

-With an amazing selection of colors, patterns and materials, reusable bottles and canteens have seriously stepped up their game the past few years. And if you’re less than fond of the metallic taste some of the stainless bottles can leave behind, opt for a glass model. They are perfect for bringing along an iced tea or coffee for an afternoon pick-me-up.

3. Buy a house plant, or three

-Plants are natural air filtration systems. In addition to purifying the air of formaldehyde, which lurks in our homes’ building materials and even furniture, some plants can filter benzene and ammonia, in addition to other toxic chemicals. If you’re unsure of your home’s light levels or are worried about potentially poisonous plants for pets and children, learn more here.

4. Reduce your carbon footprint this weekend

-A lot of our leisure activities can have big impacts on the environment. For an upcoming weekend adventure, commit to taking a day (or two) to try greener activities. Take the train or bus to a neighboring town and spend the day exploring by foot or bike. Or fill a car with family and friends for a weekend camping excursion, preferably totally unplugged. Getting outdoors, switching off and limiting time in the car allow you to have fun while living eco consciously.
