Beauty in Your Surroundings

It’s been awhile since I have had the opportunity to soak up California’s natural beauty. Living in Northern California, there exists a seemingly endless supply of hills and mountains to climb, beaches to dip your toes into the water and peaks to climb.

A few weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of visiting a few of my friends in San Francisco. It had been months since we last saw each other as one of my friends only just returned from a semester of volunteering in the Patagonia region of Chile. Plans were made for a camping trip on Saturday but nature had other plans and we awoke to the first heavy rain of fall. Luckily for us in the Bay Area there is always an alternative.

Although our plans were technically ruined, we ended up having one the best, impromptu weekends I’ve had in months. Saturday we made our way to Golden Gate Park for Fat Tire Brewing Co.’s Tour de Fat, a bicycle themed beer fest that was capped off with a free performance by Oakland’s Beats Antique. The show was fantastic, the music was new and we all found our disappointment at failed plans washed away.

The next morning we rose early and headed to Calistoga for some hiking and rock climbing. The drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and through Marin is in itself a beautiful sight. Calistoga is a charming little town near Napa and the hike was gorgeous. It was challenging and exhilarating and exactly what my body and soul was craving.

Failed plans, spontaneity or even no plans whatsoever become irrelevant when you’re surrounded by good friends and the beauty of this wonderful state. This weekend was a wonderful reminder that you don’t need weeks of planning or a pocket full of cash to have a fantastic time with those you love.
